Although Hughie Call was raised in Dallas, Texas, her great longing throughout her childhood was to get away from city life and to live on a ranch. So, when she married a Montana sheepman, a lifelong dream came true. "I was fascinated with my husband's ranch," she writes, "and every phase of the activity there was so intensely interesting to me; so interesting that I soon felt a strong urge to write about it." After living on an isolated Montana sheep ranch for twenty-five years and raising two sons there, she had not even scratched the surface so far as material was concerned. Writing a book for youngsters, with a sheep-ranch background, appealed to her. She lived with the idea in her mind, and it wasn't long before she had written THE RISING ARROW.
